Simply Piano Review: Learn how to play piano with an app
I've always wanted to learn how to play the piano. The older I became, the more daunting piano lessons became.
But as I've got older it's something I thought more and more about until last year, I finally had an epiphany. I would teach myself to play the piano.
That's when I stumbled upon an amazing app called Simply Piano, which enabled me to learn to play without the price costs usually associated with piano playing.
Simply Piano App Review
I had read plenty of reviews, before embarking on my Simply Piano journey as I was sceptical but every review sang it’s praise. Initially, I started off with a monthly free trial, which gives a good amount of time to figure out if the app is right for you.
How much does it cost?
After the free trial, you can pay in 3-month periods. For 3 months it's £38.99, 6 months £59.99 and for one year £83.99. Family plans are also included which enables the user to share the app with friends or family to learn too! You can cancel your Simply Piano subscription really easily by logging into your settings on your iPad/iPhone and then clicking on your Apple ID and going to your list of subscriptions.
How does it work?
The piano learning process is compiled of courses starting from Beginners to Intermediate ranging from chords to jazz piano.
Once you've completed a course, new songs are available that you can practice with at your leisure or you start a new course. They score you on accuracy and timings with a 3-star system.
Simply Piano works by displaying the notes you need to play, when you play them the app listens to the note to ensure it is correct and let’s you know instantly whether you are playing the correct key. It's really accurate and gives you practice rounds and breaks songs into sections to make them easier to digest. The courses are really patient and offer plenty of advice for beginners to the piano.
What piano is compatible with?
You don’t need a grand piano to learn how to play with Simply Piano. Because it listens to the sound of the keys it is compatible with most keyboards/pianos. Initially, I bought a cheap keyboard to try it out. I didn't want to invest in anything too expensive if it turned out I wasn't the next Mozart.
I then upgraded to something a little fancier when I realised I really loved playing the piano.
What songs can you play?
Simply Piano is also great because it has a good mix of modern and classic music you can learn from Billie Eilish to Billy Joel. It also has a variety of genres from classical, pop, rock, indie and alternative. Simply Piano constantly updates the app and adds new songs. Plus you can submit ideas for songs you liked to see on there
Final thoughts
In therapy, we discussed doing more things for my inner child. I had always wanted to play the piano and finding Simply Piano helped that all become a possibility. I was slow, to begin with, but with the way the courses are laid out, I got, dare I say well within a matter of weeks. Now, a year on I'm playing songs I never dreamed I would play. It's been such a good outlet for me. If you are thinking of learning to play piano, I couldn't recommend Simply Piano more. I still use it to this day to advance my piano playing skills
It is a little costly for an app but when you compare it to the cost of an actual teacher it really is good value for money. Plus I'm not a great learner with someone watching over me. I like the freedom the app gives you when learning. This app is ideal for anyone who likes to learn in solitude.
It's never too late to try something new or be the person to encourage you to do something you are passionate about.
Simply Piano is available on the app store.
